Smith, Leroy
Leroy Smith, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, June 16, at Valley View Baptist Church, 5555 Mount Vernon Rd. SE, Cedar Rapids, the Rev. Mike Gray will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annie, who he married Aug. 13, 1955; his children, Jeanne (Mike) Gray of San Diego, Calif., Bill (Terry) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Janet (Alan) Thatcher of Marion, and Donna (Randy) Nelson of Milpitas, Calif.; stepchildren, Ray Ash of La Porte City and Rose Ash of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many stepgrandchildren.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nadine Smith; two brothers, James and Walter Smith; three sisters, Bernidine Smith, Clara Bain and Dorothy Shaw; and stepson, LeRoy Witham.
Leroy was born May 19, 1928, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to William and Nadine Smith. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1946. Leroy was a Korean War veteran serving as a corporal in the United States Army. He worked for over 40 years as a miller at Quaker Oats. His interests included fishing, camping, gardening, hiking and building things. He was a loving husband and father who will be greatly missed.
