Smith, Joyce W.

Joyce W. Smith, 96, of Edgewood, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Memorial graveside service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Mount Harmony Cemetery, rural Garber, with the Rev. Penny Hansel officiating. There will be no visitation.

Joyce was born Jan. 6, 1916, at Wood Center, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Winnifred (Ash) Culbertson. Joyce received her education and graduated from Edgewood High School. On Nov. 21, 1936, Joyce was united in marriage to Wayne “Skinny” Smith at Wood Center. One son, Gary, was born to this union.

After their marriage, they made their home in Charles City for a short time, before moving back to farm north of Edgewood in 1942. They farmed until retiring in 1966, when they moved into Edgewood.

Joyce worked as a housekeeper at the Edgewood Convalescent Home and also Community Savings Bank. On June 4, 1988, Wayne died, but Joyce continued to make Edgewood her home. In 2009, Joyce moved to Marion to live with her son, Gary, until she moved to the Edgewood Convalescent Home in February 2012.

Joyce loved quilting and sketching.

Joyce is survived by her son, Gary (Joyce M.) Smith of Marion; three grandsons, David Smith of Apple Valley, Minn., Alan Smith of Enumclaw, Wash., and Randy (Jamie) Smith of Marion; and one great-grandson, Kelby Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne; four brothers, Merwin, Durward, Dale and Willie Culbertson; and one sister, Helene Hansel.
