Smith, Harold Leo 'Bud'
Harold Leo “Bud” Smith, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, in Panacea, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today at 2323 Surf Road in Ochlockonee Bay, Fla.
Harold was born in Cedar Rapids, to Carlton K. Smith and Alice A. Smith. He graduated from McKinley High School and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, before entering the Air Force in 1941, serving in Europe for 21 months. Returning home from WWII, he worked with Smith Construction Company, a family-owned business. In 1955, he moved to Coggon, where he owned and operated Coggon Bowl bowling lanes. With family, he co-owned Marion Bowl in Marion. He held a private pilot's license for many years. On retirement in 1969, he moved to Large, Fla.; then to
Panacea, Fla. in 1981.
Bud was a thoughtful and caring man, always there for his family. He could build and fix anything. “Bud can do it,” was an oft-repeated family phrase. He was a man of few words, and when he spoke it was to the point and often laced with wit. He loved to fish and golf.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Clarice Hicks of Alexandria, La., and Joyce Gordon of Marion.
Bud is survived by his sister, Dorothy Holub of Crawfordville, Fla.; nieces, Bonnie Holub (Tim Jordan) of Panacea, Rozanne Hicks of Kemah City, Texas, Travis Monroe (Richard) and Patti Leviner (Mark) of Alexandria, La., and Julie Gordon of Cedar Rapids; nephews, Jim Hicks of Alexandria, Vance Gordon (Wanda) of Marion, Marve Gordon of Cedar Rapids, and Steve Gordon of Crawfordville, Fla; and their many children and grandchildren.
He is loved and will always be missed.
