Smith, Devon C.
Devon C. Smith, 81, of 2953 Sierra Dr. NE, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at his home. Services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, where there also will be military rites. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Vince and a daughter, Mary Vaughan, both of Colorado; and two sisters, Grace Johnson of California, and Dorothy Kukla of Montana.
He is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Vaughan, Briar and Tysen VanDraska and Vince Smith; great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and special friends, Shelley and Scott VanDraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother and a sister.
Devon was born on Sept. 10, 1929, in Thermopolis, Wyo., the son of Glenn and Mary Paulfrey Smith. He married Vera M. Benda on Nov. 10, 1969, in Cedar Rapids. She died in 2010. Devon retired from the Air Force and later worked at National Oats for over 23 years, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed NASCAR, woodworking, yard work, walking, playing cards and the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
