Smith, David C. 'Dave'
David C. "Dave" Smith, 75, of 710 Brookside Drive in Iowa City, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Atrium Village in Hills, following a courageous struggle with cancer.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City with Reverend Denny Coon officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice, St. Mark's Parish Nurse Program, Motor Friends Church (Milo, Iowa) or the Iowa City Old Capitol Kiwanis Chaplain Program.
Dave was born May 16, 1934, in Warren County, the son of Earl and Florence (Wood) Smith. Growing up in Indianola, Dave received his Bachelor of Arts degree from William Penn College in 1956 and his Master of Arts in 1969 from Northeast Missouri State. He was united in marriage to Barbara Walz on August 19, 1962, in Danville. He taught in the New London school district from 1956 – 1962, Albia school district from 1962 – 1967 and then moving to Iowa City in 1967, was a teacher and basketball coach with the Iowa City Community School District for 24 years, retiring in 1991.
Dave enjoyed family vacations, golfing with his buddies, throwing horseshoes and supporting the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, where he kept stats for the men's basketball and football teams for 40 years. Dave's special joy was spending time with his granddaughters, watching them dance, run and play basketball. We will miss you Grandpa.
After retiring, Dave was well known in the Iowa City area as a painter and volunteered his services when needed. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, IDEA, NEA, Iowa City Evening Lions Club, Old Capitol Kiwanis, Iowa City Horseshoe League and Johnson County Retired Teachers. Dave was a former member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Dave is survived by his wife Barb; daughter Shelley Smith Madrigal (Frank) of Shawnee, Kan.; and his son Tim Smith (Michelle) of Altoona; his granddaughters, Jessica and Brittany Smith and Kelsey O'Hara; two brothers, Lyle Smith (Edna) of Indianola; and Marvin Smith of West Union; sister-in-law Jerry Smith of Laconn; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ival.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Denny Coon, parish nurse Carol Tippe and the congregation at St. Mark's Methodist Church. They also extend their thanks to Iowa City Hospice, Atrium Village, the Mercy doctors and nurses, the staff at Horace Mann School and the many friends who have supported Dave and the family during the last few months.
