Slothower, Sandra D. 'Sandy'
Sandra D. “Sandy” Slothower, 82, of Iowa City, formerly of Coralville, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, surrounded by her family at Mercy in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Coralville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Sandra Delores Lang was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Moville, Iowa, the daughter of Alvin and Marvel (Wright) Lang. She graduated from Sioux City Central High School and attended Morningside College in Sioux City. She was united in marriage to Donald L. Slothower on Nov. 11, 1950, in Sioux City. The couple moved to the Iowa City area, where Sandy began her career as school librarian at Coralville Central Elementary, where she enjoyed sharing her love of reading with Coralville children for over 47 years.
Sandy believed in family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and just recently, became a great-grandma.
Sandy had a strong faith and was an active member of Coralville United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Sandy served on numerous committees, sang in the choir, was a member of UMW, and a Stephens Minister. For members of her church, she was a friendly face and true friend. Sandy believed in giving back to her community. She was one of the founders of the first Coralville Public Library and she was a longtime member of the Coralville Historical Society. Sandy and her husband, Don, supported the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program throughout their marriage. Sandy enjoyed her time living at Melrose Meadows, particularly the trips they took and the many friends she had there.
Her family includes daughters, Sherri Bergstrom and her husband, John, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Tammi Anderson and her husband, Scott, of Iowa City; sons, Jeffrey Slothower and his wife, Pat, of Corvallis, Ore., and Tim Slothower of Coralville; seven grandchildren, Kari Hull (Bryan), Kathryn Bergstrom, Michael Bergstrom, Megan Harper (John), Charlie Slothower, Mallory Zielinski (Trevor) and McKenzie Anderson; great-grandson, Blake Harper; and two sisters, Mary Hawkins (Jim) of Bozeman, Mont., and Carol Ronnfeldt (Roy) of San Antonio, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Don, in 2005.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Sandy's memory to the Coralville United Methodist Church or the Coralville Public Library.
