Sloan, Leila Irene
Leila Irene Sloan, 93, of Alburnett, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at her home. Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Pastor Jon C. Moss. Visitation: 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the funeral home in Marion. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.
Leila is survived by five children, Janet Schwieger, Bloomfield, Linda (DuWayne) Schminke, Marion, Kay (Kent) Neighbor, Winthrop, and Bill (Cletis) Sloan and Jean (Gene) Neighbor, both of Alburnett; 19 grandchildren, Tammy (Gary) Stapp, Altoona, Rodney (Kim) Schwieger, Bloomfield, Sam (Cathy) Schwieger, Aurora, Ill., Brenda (Doug) Slivinski, Kearney, Mo., Doug (Kim) Schminke, Marion, Trisha (Brad) Henderson, North Liberty, Sandra (Mark) Waring, Walker, Steve (Amy) Neighbor, Center Point, Scott (Kristin) Neighbor, Center Point, Eldon (Kathy) Neighbor, Central City, Konnie (Brent) Borrett, Center Point, Mark (Stacey) Neighbor, Center Point, Eric (Jen) Sloan, Alburnett, Heather (Jeff) Carrothers, Alburnett, Adam (Kerri) Sloan, Alburnett, Kyle Sloan, Alburnett, Michael (Courtney) Neighbor, Bettendorf, Jason (Renee) Neighbor, Alburnett, and Todd (Carrie) Neighbor, Cedar Rapids; 55 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Mildred Kirk, Marion; brother-in-law, Allan (Enid) Sloan, California; and a special friend, Deana Snow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; her parents; her brother, Merrill (Marjorie) Flitsch; sister-in-law, Virgina (Bob) Titler; and brother-in-law, Clifford Kirk.
Leila was born March 30, 1919, in Alburnett, the daughter of Jacob and Lera (Lyon) Flitsch. She graduated from Alburnett High School in 1936. Leila was united in marriage to William Lee Sloan on Feb. 22, 1939, in Alburnett. They farmed near Toddville before moving to their current farm in 1944. Lee died Aug. 5, 1999.
Leila loved her life with Lee. Together, side by side, is how they lived, farmed, and attended church, community and family events. She was a wonderful cook, always sharing her goodies with others.
Leila was a member of Alburnett United Methodist Church, the Alburnett Historical Society, and a long-standing member of the CC Club. She loved birthday parties, the Iowa State Fair, basketball, Sloan reunions, and her home.
Leila's family would like to thank Deana, Deb, Barbara, Carman, Gary, and the staff at Home Choice Senior Care and St. Luke's Hospice for their loving care.
