Slaman, Michael
Michael Slaman, 93, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, after a brief illness.
Michael was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He joined the Army in 1939. He started his career in the public transit business in 1950 and was transferred to El Paso, Texas, to work as a supervisor of buses, streetcars and bridge toll collectors for El Paso City Lines in 1962. He retired as superintendent of transportation from Sun Metro in 1985.
He began his second career helping the elderly at the Jewish Community Center/Chai Manor Residence until age 85. He enjoyed travel, writing poetry, exercise and spending time with his lovely friend and partner of 14 years, Maria Elena Abraham. He was a member of St. George Orthodox Church of El Paso.
He was preceded in passing by his wife of 51 years, Mary Sanders Slaman in 1992; son, Mark; and brother. Eugene.
He is survived by his children, Michael of Elephant Butte, N.M., Monte (Pattie) of El Paso and Melinda of Enumclaw, Wash.; grandchildren, Timothy, James, Scott, John, Jessica and Aaron; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary, Mathilda and Catherine; and brother, Floyd.
