Sister Mary Kurt, RSM, age 92, died on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at HallMar Village Care Center in Marion, IA. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at the Chris and Suzy DeWolf Family Innovation Center (9000 C Ave. NE, Marion, IA). Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Arrangements are with Teahen Funeral Home.
Sister Mary was born on January 15, 1932 in Bernard, IA. She was the sixth child of 12 children born to John G. and Ella (Moorman) Kurt. She attended St. Patrick School in Garryowen and graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on January 20, 1949 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1954.
Sister Mary spent over 50 years in education in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. She taught at: St. John School, Waterloo; Immaculate Conception School, Elma; St. Joseph School, Marion; and Sacred Heart, Oelwein. After her retirement from teaching, she continued to serve as a classroom volunteer at Sacred Heart School, Oelwein and St. Matthew School, Cedar Rapids.
Sister Mary was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, Dorrance and Charles Kurt; four sisters, Germaine Bechen, Sister Bernice Kurt, Rita Martin, and Jane Steffen. She is survived by her brothers, Earl (Louetta) of Cascade; Tom (Rita) of Bernard and Pete (Mary Jane) of Peosta; and her sister, Lois Donovan of Cascade. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Sister Linda Bechen, RSM and other Sisters of Mercy.
