Sigler, Malcolm W. 'Mickey'
Malcolm W. “Mickey” Sigler died Nov. 22, 2013, at his home in Cedar Rapids after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A Celebration of Life service will be 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet visitors at Cedar Memorial from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service on Monday. Private burial will be at Cedar Memorial at a future date.
Mickey Sigler was born with his twin brother, Michael, in Wooster, Ohio on Nov. 3, 1957, the youngest children of Donald and Mary Bahm Sigler. He spent his childhood in Mansfield, Ohio, and graduated from high school there in 1976. He studied at Ohio State University and Purdue University before completing his nursing degree from Kirkwood Community College in 1996.
Mickey was a consummate nurse, having spent nearly 30 years serving patients and their families at University of Chicago Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Garnett Place, Senior Housing Management, the Linn County Jail and Solon Nursing Care Center.
Countless patients and their families, as well as many colleagues through the years, remember Mickey for his honest, compassionate, and devoted care and his infectious sense of humor. Those core principles led Mickey to Dr. Chirantan Ghosh when he needed patient-centered care for his cancer.
The family thanks Dr. Ghosh and the entire staff at the Ghosh Clinic for the extraordinary quality of care they provided Mickey throughout his illness. They also wish to thank Dr. William Silverman, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, for his generosity of time and skill early in Mickey's illness. Finally, gratitude to Unity Point Hospice of Cedar Rapids.
Mickey is survived by his spouse of 25 years, James Kern of Cedar Rapids, and their dog, Rudy; his siblings, Barbara Jo (Rich) Bonanno of Lake Park, Fla., Sandy (Larry) Coffindaffer of Mansfield, Ohio, Ruthann (Russ) Shoemaker of Maumee, Ohio, Donald (Debbie) Sigler of North Palm Beach, Fla., and his twin, Michael (Tammy Treadway) Sigler of Mansfield, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Norma Kern, and sister-in-law, Deborah Toy, both of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews and their children; and numerous friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and many beloved pets.
Memorials may be directed to the family, the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation, the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter, or a charity of the donor's choosing.
Please leave a message, tribute or memory to Mickey's family at under Obituaries.
