Short, Dorothy
Dorothy Short, 87, beloved mother and grandmother, passed into her Savior's arms while surrounded by family on Dec. 22, 2011, at the Solon Care Center. A celebration of her life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Brosh Chapel.
She was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Earl and Marian (Hickey) Bennett, and grew up in Ely. She lived in numerous Midwest towns but primarily raised her family in the Marengo and central Iowa areas.
She is survived by her children, Cheri Marshall of Cedar Rapids, Sandy Buehler (Gary) of Johnson Lake, Neb., Richard Schumacher (Terri) of Lisbon, the late Linda Denman (Van) of Cedar Rapids, Joyce Schumacher of Long Lake, Minn., Sandra Kaye Deahl of Waterloo, Steve Cerny (Ellen) of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Diana Johnson (Brandon) of Norwalk. She is also blessed with and loved by 39 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Dale Schumacher in 1959, Edward Alexander Cerny in 1974 and Bernard James Short in 2005; as well as a daughter, Linda Diane Denman in 2000.
Her interests included gardening, cake decorating and nurturing her many children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Antioch Christian Church although she had been limited in attendance in recent years due to her health. For many years she was an avid square dancer, and a member of the Ladora Saddle Club and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be distributed at a later date.
