Shirley J. Swallom, 79, of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, at
the funeral home. Interment: Palo Cemetery, Palo.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Russ Swallom of Hiawatha; her children, Chuck Swallom of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Sheri) Swallom of Urbana and Sherrie (Randy) Tollefson of Vinton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elaine (Gus) Woolf of Pennsylvania and Joanne (Richard) Langenfelder of Delaware; and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Rod Swallom.
Shirley was born Feb. 26, 1938, in Arbutus, Md., the daughter of Joseph W. and Marie (McFadden) Spence. She graduated from Catonsville, Md., High School in 1956. Shirley married Russ Swallom on Sept. 10, 1956, in Arbutus. She was a homemaker who enjoyed garage sales, playing bingo and trying her luck at the casinos.
