Shirley Margaret Steffen died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City at age 91.
Shirley was born Aug. 19, 1922, near Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Clare Melvin and Vena Margaret (Pope) Faas. She graduated from Millers-burg High School in 1939 and attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. She grew up in the North English and Millersburg communities. Shirley was united in marriage to August Byron Steffen on Aug. 31, 1940, at Eden United Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home and farmed west of Williamsburg until retiring and moved into town. Shirley had worked for ASCE services for 35 years, retiring from Poweshiek County in 1984.
She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ near Marengo, where she was secretary for 30 years and served as a deacon and elder. She enjoyed genealogy, golfing, playing bridge and wintering in Texas, but one of her greatest joys was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Karon (Del) Smith of Madison, Wis., Karol (Larry) Roehrkasse of Stillwater, Minn., and August "Gus" Steffen of Stilwell, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Olivia Hornig, Rachel Rahn, Aaron Smith, Stephanie James, August Kyle Steffen, MacKenzie Steffen, Mallory Steffen and Faith Steffen; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2007; a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Smith; two brothers. William H. Faas and Donald Faas; and a sister, Elaine Cram.
Celebration of Life service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Trinity United Church of Christ, Marengo. Pastor Grant Speece will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery near Millersburg. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
A memorial fund has been established for Trinity United Church of Christ.
