Shirley M. Pernicka,
84, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at St. Luke's, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time Friday. Service: 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Larry (Mary Taylor) Pernicka of Cedar Rapids, Sandra (Larry) Serbousek of Conroy, Louis A. "Duke" (Sussana) Pernicka of San Antonio, Texas, Kimberly Dobbins of Cedar Rapids and Michelle Pernicka of San Antonio; and a grandson, Andre Sallis, who was raised by Louis and Shirley; son-in-law, Ozie Eggelton of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother, Sidney Batten.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis Pernicka; daughter, Linda Eggelton; brother, Donald Batten; two grandsons, Larry Pernicka Jr. and Cameron Schulte; and sisters, Elaine Vozenilek, Marilyn Kitzman and Jeanne McGuire.
Shirley was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of Sidney and Bernice (Gretchen) Batten. She graduated from Franklin High School. Shirley worked for May's Drug and at J.C. Penney for 25 plus years as a manager. Shirley enjoyed making arts and crafts and was an avid seamstress. She also loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had two special dogs, Chi-Chi and Sammie; and granddog, Higley. Shirley loved life, laughter and people.
