Shirley Mae Niermeyer, 80, of Marion, formerly of Tipton and Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital Hospice Unit from chronic leukemia and chronic lymphoma. Visitation will be held at St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. The Rev. Matt Schneider-Adams, Pastor Dennis Morey and Chaplain Michael
Elmore will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
Shirley was born Jan. 9, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, to Clifford and Elsie (Spalding) McClelland. She lived near Springville
until the family moved to Atkins where she started school. She attended Atkins and Newhall schools, graduating from Newhall High School in 1956.
She was employed at Turner Microphone Co. from 1957 to 1964. She married Owen Niermeyer on April 18, 1964, at St. John's UCC. They lived in the Clarence/Tipton area until they moved to Cedar Rapids in 1999. They did construction work together for home improvements until they fully retired. Owen passed away on Nov. 29, 2017. Shirley moved to Bickford Assisted Living in December.
Shirley was a member of St. John's since 1964 and attended Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Her interests were playing games, family genealogy, roller skating, bowling, dancing and antiques. She did daycare while living in her home near Tipton.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane (Al) Benesh of Marion, and their children, Cody, Ryan and Travis; son Daniel (friend Dee and her family) of Mechanicsville, and his three children, Justin (friend Bethany and her son, Chase), Jessika (and her children, Kayden, Paisley and McKenna) and Brody (and his friend Callie); and son, Ronald (Melissa) of Ankeny, and their son, Benjamin; sisters, Dorothy Dircks of Clarence and Connie (Chris) Chrisman of Center Point; and several nieces and nephews. She was very proud to have three great-grandchildren, Kayden and his twin sister, Paisley, and McKenna.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Owen; brothers, Robert and Donald; sister-in-laws, Franny and Arlene; brother-in-law, Dewey; and nephew, Tommy McClelland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
