Shirley Musselman
SHIRLEY MUSSELMAN
Marion
Shirley Floy Musselman, of Marion, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at Summit Pointe in Marion. Shirley was born in Genoa, Neb., to Wesley M. Winell and Florence (Gillespie) Winell on Aug. 23, 1925. She attended Genoa Public School for 12 years, graduating in May 1942. Her first job was at the Genoa National Bank. She then moved to Omaha, Neb., and attended Van Sant School of Business. She then worked for National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Omaha.
Shirley's high school sweetheart, Calvin Musselman, returned from North Africa, where he was stationed for the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at a naval school in Chicago as an aircraft mechanics instructor. The couple were married on Nov. 27, 1944, and Shirley moved to Chicago. After the Naval enlistment was served, they moved to Kansas City, Mo., where Calvin attended a school and Shirley worked as a secretary. A job took the couple to Waterloo, Iowa, for employment at KXEL radio station. This job took them to Waterloo, Dysart and La Porte City, Iowa, and the family increased to four with the birth of two sons, Thomas and Edward.
A change of employment moved the family to Marion, Iowa. Shirley was hired as a secretary for Rockwell-Collins and worked until her retirement in 1976.
Shirley was a stay-at-home mother while her sons were young. She was active in their church and school activities. She was a den mother when they were Cub Scouts. Mom and Dad attended sports they participated in.
After Shirley's retirement from Collins, she enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. She always enjoyed music and played piano as a young girl and later a small electronic organ. She played clarinet in the high school band and Genoa city band. Shirley liked solving crossword puzzles. She doted on being Grandma to her three granddaughters and was proud of their accomplishments. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors are her two sons, Thomas (Linda) of Skillman, N.J., and Edward (Cindy) of Mechanicsville, Iowa; and three granddaughters, Teresa Kavanagh (Tim) of Anchorage, Alaska, Carrie Musselman of Robins, Iowa, and Amy Musselman of Skillman, N.J.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Calvin; her parents; a sister, Barbara; and a brother, Robert.
Shirley was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Marion. Shirley was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Marion. She received a 50-year pin in 2011.
Our heartfelt thanks to the people of Summit Pointe, Hospice Compassus and Home Choice for the loving care they provided to Shirley.
A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Nancy Redman will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, Iowa. Inurnment will be at Valley View Cemetery, Genoa, Neb., at a later date.
