Shirley was born Dec. 18, 1932, in West Branch, Iowa, the daughter of Axel and Elma (Gilster) Werner. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to John Francis McCune Jr. on Oct. 9, 1959. After the marriage, they moved to Parnell and later the farm south of Williamsburg. Shirley enjoyed caring for her children, gardening, baking, canning, playing bingo and caring for animals. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. Shirley passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at the English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 85.
She is survived by five children, Katherine (Jay) Friesen of Tucson, Ariz., Tom (Dar) McCune of Cedar Rapids, Janet (Monte) Kugley of Homestead, Carolyn McCune of Des Moines and Kim McCune (Steve Fuhrmeister) of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Joy McCune of Albert Lea, Minn.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, John III and William; a daughter, Barbara; and three sisters, Alice Gilmore, Mary Cornwall and Marge Salisbury.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Deacon Mark Sandersfeld will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, where there will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Memorials are for Safe Haven of Iowa County.
