Shirley Marie O'Brien, 68, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, following a brief illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove with Father Robert Cloos officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Peter's Catholic Church or to Iowa City Eagles Lodge 695.
Shirley was born Nov. 28, 1953, the daughter of Harlan and Betty (Boarts) Scharf. On May 6, 1976, Shirley married Dale O'Brien.
Shirley was employed for over 40 years as a housekeeper in labor and delivery at UIHC. She retired in 2018.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary. Shirley loved her family and her four-legged companions.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Dale; children, Joseph (Sarah) O'Brien of Iowa City and their children Tyler and Emily Angela (Bradley) Berger of Iowa City and their children Brandon, Camren, and Haley, Joshua O'Brien of Hills and daughter Jolene, Jasen O'Brien (Elizabeth Kelly) of Hills and children Michael, Madison and Mackenzie, Kelland O'Brien of Iowa City, and Natalie Dejardrin of Cedar Rapids and children Brandon and Brianna; her siblings, Laura Matthess, David (Deborah) Scharf, Deeanna Smith, Brenda Schmidt and Harlan (Teresa) Scharf; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.
