Shirley Mae Manternach, 82, of Monticello, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, at Pinicon Place Senior Living in Anamosa after a long illness.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a parish vigil service will be held at 4 p.m.
Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, where a Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11 a.m.
Shirley was born Feb. 5, 1935, in Farley, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph E. and Molly (Soppe) Besler. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Farley. On Sept. 2, 1961, she married James Edwin Manternach at St. Joseph Church in Farley, and they made their home in rural Monticello. They retired and moved off the farm in 2000. Shirley worked at Monticello Nursing and Rehab for 28 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, bowling and dancing.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Manternach, and three sons, Keith (Carla) Manternach, Neil (Marlena) Manternach and Kraig (Mikki) Manternach, all of Monticello; seven grandchildren, Josh Manternach, Nichole (Nick) Wilson and Marissa, Andrea, Jenna, Riley and Karli Manternach; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Clay Wilson; five sisters, Jean (Mike) Knepper of Dyersville, Verla (Pat) Horsfield of Epworth, Norma (Jim) Butcher of Farley, Helen (Dick) Schnier of Dyersville and Theresa (Steve) Gulyosh of Dubuque; and in-laws, Paul (Elodie) Manternach of Cedar Rapids, Father Carl Manternach of Dubuque, Melvin (Betty) Manternach and Bernard (Anna) Manternach of Monticello, Ruth Ahart of Dows City, Mary (George) Whalen of Carson City, Nev., and Joyce (Richard) Lynch of Cascade.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Nancy Lynn; a brother, Don (Mary) Besler; and a brother-in-law, Mike Ahart.
Memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart Catholic School and Preschool.
