Shirley Mae Boyson, 82, passed away peacefully at Bickford of Marion as she
was being called to her eternal home on May 18, 2022, and into the presence of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior.
Shirley was born March 23, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Dale B. and Nora E. Smith.
Shirley had fond memories of spending time in the summers at Lake McBride with her older brother George and their parents. In her high school years, she worked at Joseph's Beauty Salon cleaning all of the equipment for the stylists and restocking their supplies. She also worked part time in a dental office.
Shirley was the first graduating class of Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, 1958. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Bruce. Shirley and Bruce were united in marriage Oct. 29, 1960. After high school, she would go on to work at Collins Radio as a Micro Film Operator from 1958-61 until the birth of their first child and then would stay home for the years to come to raise their three children.
Taking family trips in the RV was something the whole family enjoyed. With trips to Florida and Colorado, being some of their favorite places.
Gardening, sewing, crafts, refinishing furniture along with collecting antiques and going to flea markets as a family were some of the many things she enjoyed.
Shirley was an active member at Cedar Rapids First Assembly of God church. Involved in the church choir and many Easter and Christmas productions, being a greeter at the front doors and ministering on the Prayer Team with her husband Bruce. They together with Mike and Shirley Hart served for many years on the Marriage Enrichment Team.
Survivors include her children, Christine (Craig) Steen, Michael (Gail) Boyson and Steven (Victoria) Boyson; and eight grandchildren who brought her great joy, Meghan, Courtney, Jonathan, Melissa, Cassandra, Cody, Cole and Cailie Ellen.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce F. Boyson; father, Dale B. Smith; mother, Nora E. Smith-Sells; brother, George A. Smith; stepmother, Mary Odland-Smith; and stepfather, Roy Sells.
Shirley was a very special lady, mom, granny and friend who will be greatly missed and remembered for her strong faith, love for her family, beautiful smile and hugs that she freely gave.
