Shirley M. Loop, 79,
of Marion, formerly of Monticello, died Monday, March 30, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospice Center in Cedar Rapids after a brave battle with Parkinson's disease. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at the funeral home with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Al Polito will conduct services.
Shirley was born Aug. 25, 1935, in Winthrop, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Wilda (Griswold) Dennie. She graduated from Winthrop High School with the class of 1952 and attended Cedar Rapids Business College. She married Bert Loop on Aug. 20, 1964, in Aurora, Colo. Shirley was a secretary at United Airlines in the 1960s until she and Bert moved to Monticello in 1969. She and Bert owned and operated the Loop Motel, Ballroom and Restaurant, having been one of the first to bring country and western music to Monticello, most notably Crystal Gayle and Mickey Gilley. After Bert's death in 1977, Shirley continued to run the businesses until 1999, when she retired to Marion.
Survivors include her children, Nancy (Mike Palmersheim) Walton of Anamosa, Rosanne (Blake) Jones of West Des Moines, Deanna (Stephen Thomas) Loop of Marion and Andrew (Brenda) Loop of Dike; six grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Walton, Courtney Lee, Hunter and Tyler Volk and Skylar Loop; a sister, Helen Donnelly of Independence; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Jason Walton; and two brothers, Dean Dennie and Dale Dennie.
Memorials are preferred to a Parkinson's research foundation of the donor's choice.
