Shirley M. Herdlicka died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at English Valley Care Center. She lived 85 years.
Shirley was born March 29, 1929, in Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of Warren Wesley (Bob) and Caroline (Schwab) Crawford. She grew up in the Parnell community and graduated from Parnell High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Ronald Gene Herdlicka at Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church near North English on June 19, 1947.
Shirley was a farm wife and also worked 25 years at Shellar-Globe/ UTA, retiring in 1991. She and Gene farmed near Millersburg from 1947 to 1995, when they moved to Keota. After Gene's death, Shirley moved to North English in the spring of 2002.
Shirley was a member of Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church, where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School for many years, and had been secretary of the Women's Missionary Council. She was a "Prayer Warrior" to many and knew God's word. Shirley collected owls as a hobby.
She is survived by daughters, Cheryl (Jerry) Webber of Cleburne, Texas, and Karen (Jeff) Kirkpatrick of Cedar Rapids; sons, Thomas Herdlicka of Richmond Hills, N.Y., and Paul Herdlicka of Parnell; son-in-law, Phil Temby of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Tiffany (Les) Howard, Molly (Josh) Rechkemmer, Travis Herdlicka, Justin Kirkpatrick, Nichole (Jason) Favalora, Joshua Kirkpatrick and Nathan Herlicka; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Wade of North English.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Caroline Crawford; husband, Gene Herdlicka; daughter, Rhonda Temby; brothers, Jack and Arden Crawford; and sisters, Lucille Markwell, Annette Frey, Mary Ann Cox, Delores Knipfer and Jennie Grimm.
Memorial and burial services will be held in early spring at Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church, rural North English, with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Millersburg Cemetery, Millersburg.
A memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association.
