Shirley Goodwin Jones, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Oct. 2, 2023, at the Woodlands of Meth-Wick. Services are to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, Ky., with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Lexington.
Survivors are her husband of 64 years, Robert of Cedar Rapids; son, Robert Jr. (Nancy) of Lexington, S.C.; daughter, Elizabeth (Russell) Brandt of Center Point, Iowa; grandchildren, Amanda Jones of Adairsville, Ga., Nathan Jones of Lexington, S.C., Brittany Brandt of Norfolk, Va., Marissa Brandt of Des Moines, Iowa, and Brayton (Miranda) Brandt Of Denver, Colo.; sister-in-law, Jeanne Goodwin of St. Augustine, Fla.; and two nieces and one nephew.
Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence B. Goodwin Jr., COL, (USA Ret); a sister, Linda Lee Goodwin, who died in infancy; and her parents, Lawrence Bradley Goodwin and Lavinia Cook Goodwin.
Shirley was born Aug. 30, 1935, in Whitesburg, Ky. She attended high school in Whitesburg, Ky., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., before graduating from Henry Clay High School in Lexington. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, she worked for the Kroger Co., in Cincinnati, and then IBM in Lexington. When she announced her engagement to Robert, IBM informed her that she would have to resign because IBM did not employ married women. She loved to travel and was proud that she had visited all 50 states including four trips to both Alaska and Hawaii. She also visited Mexico and Canada including driving parts of the Alcan highway. She lived for two years at Ft. Greely, Alaska, while Robert was in the Army. Later Shirley worked as a secretary and registrar at Henry Clay and Dunbar High schools. She sang in church choirs from teen age years through adulthood to include three Methodist churches in Lexington and Methodist churches and Army chapels in five states.
