Shirley Jean Conner, 77, was born Sept. 28, 1936, in North English, Iowa, and died in her home, surrounded by her loving family, on July 25, 2014, after a three-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).
Shirley thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family, hosting company in her home, hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, cooking and sewing.
She attended North English High School and met her husband of 61 years, Marion, roller skating in Millersburg. They lived in North English and made their permanent home of 54 years in Millersburg.
Shirley worked 16 years at Victor Manufacturing and at Evans Photography/ Lifetouch for over 15 years.
She was the daughter of Henry and Geneva (Blount) Simoens.
She is survived by her husband, Marion Conner; their five children, Catherine (Conner) Lown, Roseville, Calif., Sharon (Conner) Widmer (Neil), Deep River, John Conner (Jean), Tiffin, Susan (Conner) Voss (Bob), North English, and Beth (Conner) Strasser, Homestead. She had 14 grandchildren, Brian Lown, Kelly (Winegarden) Hall, Luke Winegarden, Jaime (Lown) Young, Tyler Winegarden, Anne Winedgarden, Lynston (Blain) Hummer, Luke Gregory, Danny Conner, Clayton Voss, Camie Widmer, Dillon Conner, Nick Strasser and Allison Voss, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a very special grandmother and she loved Maxine Voss' potato salad.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Penny (Davis) Conner; and son-in-law, Roger Lown.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be at the lower level of the nature center at Lake Iowa on Tuesday, July 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. Powell Funeral Home, North English, is in charge of arrangements.
