Shirley Carolyn Fisher (Sem), 99, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, in Cascade, Iowa. Services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024, 11:00 am, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
Shirley was born in Clinton, Iowa to Gertrude and Bjarne Sem. In 1944, Shirley married the love of her life, Robert L. Fisher, in Laramie, Wyoming. Shirley devoted herself to raising their two daughters while Robert served his country in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Robert and Shirley moved to Cedar Rapids in 1966 and Shirley became an integral part of the community, particularly at First Presbyterian Church where they were longtime members. She loved to host gatherings and present programs to various organizations, including Tuesday Study Club, Questors, P.E.O. and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
She found joy in creating, whether painting with watercolors, playing the piano, knitting, or making quilts for her grandchildren. Above all, Shirley treasured moments spent with her family, both close to home and in Norway and kept her family knit together with love.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Pamela (David) Smith and Patrice (Micheal) Marling, five grandchildren: Sarah (Doug) Timmer, Steven (Julie) Smith, Hannah (Paul) Byrne, Seth (Kathleen) Marling, Elizabeth (Erik) Sjoberg; along with eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 77 years, Robert, her parents, and her sister, LaVerge Farwell.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Accura Healthcare of Cascade, the dedicated team from Hospice of Dubuque, and Deacon Joe of St. Thomas Aquinas, for their unwavering support and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to Hospice of Dubuque, 1670 JFK Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002 or online at https;/hospiceofdubuque.org/donation.
