Shira, Doris M.
Doris M. Shira, 90, formerly of Las Vegas, Nev., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in her home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. William B. Harnish. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Shira; children, Delores Becicka, Jack (Betty) Robertson, Joan (Richard) Johnson, Shirley Hilleshiem and Penny (Richard) Lerch; 11 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Mable Gallagher, Joseph Slaymaker Jr. and Beverly Lentner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Wilma Slaymaker; son, Tony Shira; siblings, Alfred Slaymaker and Thelma Ellis; and sons-in-law, Buzz Becicka and Leroy Hilleshiem.
Doris was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Marengo, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Wilma Slaymaker. She married Charles Shira on Sept. 5, 1959, in Iowa City. She worked at Wilson's Meat Packing for 30 years.
Doris enjoyed bingo, cards, especially rummy, and was a wonderful decorator. She especially loved spending time with her family.
