Sheryl Ann Hunter
Cedar Rapids
Sheryl Ann was born October 20, 1939 to Henry (Hank) and Mildred Immerfall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended Jefferson High School, and there she met her future husband, Christopher Hunter. They were married August 20, 1960, and immediately moved to Rantoul, Illinois as Chris had enlisted in the Air Force. It was here in Illinois that she gave birth to son, Brett, and daughter, Debra. After Chris’ tour was over, they moved back to Cedar Rapids. In 1965, the family left the snowy land of Iowa and moved to sunny Long Beach, California. Once here, she gave birth to daughter, Lynn.
They attended St. Stephens Lutheran Church for many years before joining Christ Lutheran Church in the late 1970’s. Sheryl was very involved in her church. For many, many years, she sang in the choir, played the handbells, volunteered with the altar guild, and sewed. Boy could she sew! She made many of the paraments one sees hanging in the church, celebrating the various seasons. She was also part of a group that handmade quilts for the high school seniors to celebrate their graduation. Her quilts were works of art. Even though she was not one who sought the limelight, she entered a few of her quilts in the LA County Fair and walked away with blue ribbons.
Sheryl also enjoyed traveling. She and Chris found themselves in New York City, England and Australia. When Chris retired from the Long Beach Fire Dept., they purchased a motorhome. They literally bought it so their dog and sidekick, Harley, could travel with them. And travel, they did. They put thousands of miles on it, seeing America.
Sheryl was always one to lend a helping hand. Whether it was serving as the Den Mother for Brett’s Cub Scout troop, or Debra’s Bluebird group, driving to pick up Chris after one of his far flung bike trips, or just cleaning up after an event at church, you always knew you could count on Sheryl. She was the consummate caregiver. She loved being a mom, a wife, a gramma, a great-gramma, and a friend to everyone. We will greatly miss her enthusiasm, her giggle, her flat chocolate cakes, and her falling asleep on the couch on Christmas mornings. Long live the Boggle Queen’s record!
After a battle with dementia, Sheryl passed away on June 28, 2025 at Westmont of Cypress memory care.
Sheryl is survived by her three children Brett (Laura) Hunter of Long Beach, Debra Hunter of Bigfork, Mountana and Lynn Hunter (Marty Holloway) of Sacramento; three grandchildren Jason Hunter (Ryann Higgins), Jami Hunter and Hunter Holloway; and three great-grandchildren, Presley Hunter, Peyton Hunter and Olivia Hunter.
