Sherry, Peggy Joy
Peggy Joy Sherry, 79, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010. She was born to the late Orville and Georgia Hesson McLerran in Moss, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Donald F. Sherry, who passed in 1999, an infant granddaughter and one brother.
Survivors include her children, Nancy (Robert) Eichelberger of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Deborah (Gregory) Hopper of Robins, and David (Jo Anne) Sherry of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Nowicki and Katherine Botts.
She graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1947, married in 1951, and spent the next 20 years raising her children. She took great pleasure in going back to work in the 1970s, working for Schmidt Optical, Stationers and retired from the Army Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1995.
Peggy was a wonderful, loving and supportive mother and wife who especially treasured spending time with her grandchildren. As a member of the Dulcet Club and Wives of the Music Men at the Murat Shrine, she enjoyed working with the bands and traveling to conventions and competitions around the country with her husband. She was also an active member of the Greenwood Presbyterian Church.
In 2007, Peggy moved to live at the Higley Mansion in Cedar Rapids, receiving excellent care from the staff and her daughter. She will be fondly remembered for her generous heart and gentle spirit by family and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
