Shelton, Robert F. Jr.
Robert F. Shelton Jr., 94, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke's Hospital, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011. There will be no services but a Celebration of Life at a later date at the Homeport. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
Bob is survived by a brother, Rear Adm. Doniphan Shelton, USN (ret) and wife Peggy of Del Mar, Calif.; nieces, Deborah Thomson, Phoenix, Ariz., Donna Kacmarcik, Oceanside, Calif., and Sue Ann Schulte, Phoenix, Ariz.; two nephews, Scott and John Hickson of Iowa City; and good friend, Carol Weger and family.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; and sister, Margaret Hickson.
Robert was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Pleasanton, Kan., to Robert and Mary Shelton. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Naval Aviator in the Western Pacific at Peleliu, Okinawa and other combat areas from 1941 to the end of the war in August 1945. Robert was employed by Roadway Trucking Co. for over 30 years before retiring in 1986.
Bob was a kind and gentle man, well liked by everyone who knew him, even strangers meeting him for the first time. Bob is notorious for his root beer floats in the night club scene. He loved to be behind the wheel and relished traveling just for the sake of driving somewhere. Life was richer for having known him.
