Following graduation from Oakland (Iowa) High School in 1984, he attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, with his Bachelor of Art degree in classics. On June 15, 1991, he was united in marriage to Audrey K. Leichty in Wayland, Iowa. The couple have lived in Iowa City since, where they have raised their family. For over the past 20 years, Shawn has been associated with the University of Iowa, most recently as editorial assistant.
Shawn has been a man of strong faith and strong family beliefs. He was a great husband, father, son and brother, who truly believed that to follow Christ you had to live each day in his honor. Through all the trials in his life, his faith remained strong, and his actions committed to the Lord.
Shawn's family includes his wife, Audrey; their two sons, Wesley R. Platt and Seth A. Platt, both at home; Shawn's mother, Diana Fender, and her husband, Jim, of Hancock, Iowa; two brothers, Lance Platt and his wife, Dorothy, of Lansing, Kan., and Scott Platt and his wife, Colleen, of University Park, Iowa; Audrey's parents, Orlin and Esther Leichty of Washington; wife's siblings; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce.
