Shaw, Sally L.
Sally L. Shaw, 76, a resident of the Solon Nursing Care Center, died Monday, July 5, 2010. Her body will be cremated and the family will have a private memorial. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Sally was born in Owatonna, Minn., on March 10, 1934, the daughter of Miles and Lou Soukup. She was married to James Fred Shaw on March 29, 1958. She attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., the University of Minnesota, and completed her internship in Medical Technology at Rockford Memorial Hospital, Rockford, Ill. She was initially employed as a blood bank supervisor at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and the St. Luke's Hospital in Denver, Colo. But she practiced the majority of her profession and career at St. Luke's Hospital Clinical Laboratories, Cedar Rapids, and retired in 1993 as assistant administrative technologist after 31 years of service.
She was a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Management Association, the American Association of Blood Banks and the Iowa Society of Medical Technologists.
She was a dedicated community volunteer, serving in many capacities in RSVP, St. Luke's Volunteers, Linn County Foster Care Review Board, St. Luke's Hospice Program and assistance to the elderly. Sally was known for her compassion, dedication and love shown to family, friends and community. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life. She will be deeply missed by all those she touched.
Surviving Sally are her children, two sons, Jeffrey (Deb) of Cedar Rapids and Dan (Kay) of Rosemount, Minn.; and a daughter Kristin (Jerry) McAtee of Solon.
Seven grandchildren survive, Jacob and Chelsey Shaw, Grant and Claire Shaw and Samantha, Lillee and James McAtee.
She was preceded in death by her parents in 1976; her husband, James (Fred) Shaw in 1987; and her youngest son, Jamie in 2003.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Foundation, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the American Diabetic Association.
