Sharon Catherine (Selzer) Ham, 72, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016.
Born Aug. 30, 1943, in Vernon, Texas, to Glenn and Mary (Kiffe) Selzer, she was raised in Fairfax and graduated from Prairie High School in 1961. She later received a B.A. in English and history from Mount Mercy College and an M.A. in history from the University of Iowa.
Sharon married John Ham Jr. on Aug. 3, 1968. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1993. She taught in schools in Clear Lake, Cedar Rapids and La Crosse, Wis.
After spending several years as a stay-at-home wife and mother, she worked at City High School for 24 years, retiring in 2005, in order to care for her grandchildren.
Sharon is survived by her sons, John (Jill Hofmockel) and Michael of Iowa City, and her grandchildren, Thomas and Kathryn. Also surviving are her brother, Steve (Marietta Hogan) Selzer of Iowa City; her sister, Cathy (Ron) Secrist of Ames; a brother-in-law, Donald Pfeiffer of Washington; along with many nieces and nephews; and a loving extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and her sister, Cindy Pfeiffer.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Iowa City on Saturday at 11 a.m. Sharon's family will greet friends at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Private burial of cremains will follow at the Fairfax Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairfax Public Library or St. Patrick's Church.
