Shane M. Bingham, 56, of Toledo, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown after a short battle with cancer. It was Shane's wish to be cremated and at this time there are no formal services planned. A golf benefit and celebration of life was held Sept. 20 at the Tama-Toledo Country Club in his honor.
Shane was born May 14, 1958, in Moline, Ill. He lived in the Quad Cities until 1963, when his family returned to Galena, Ill. Shane graduated from Galena High School in 1976.
He started as a radio operator and jailer at the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department in April 1973. He was promoted to deputy sheriff in May 1977. He graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy at the University of Illinois at Champaign in May 1979. After graduating from the academy, he worked as deputy until he was promoted to detective.
In 1982, Shane moved to Tama to become the assistant chief of police for the Tama Police Department. After three months, he was promoted to chief of police. He completed his law enforcement certification at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo. Shane served as chief of police until July 1985. Shane served on the Tama Fire Department for 17 years, where his wife, Linda, acted as secretary for several of those years.
After serving as chief of police, he then worked at Ternus Electric from October 1985 to April 1997. He then started Bingham Plumbing & Electric in Toledo in April 1997.
Shane met Linda Abrams in 1983 and they later married on May 3, 1986. The next year on May 30, their daughter, Leslie Frances, was born.
He enjoyed deer hunting with the group south of town, fishing trips to Canada and South Dakota and looking for morel mushrooms. He also enjoyed playing golf and was an active member at the Tama-Toledo Country Club and acted as club president. Even after moving to Iowa, Shane remained an avid Chicago sports fan. He took many trips to Wrigley Field to watch Chicago Cubs games. He also watched Chicago Bears games every Sunday during the fall, Bear Down.
Shane is survived by his wife, Linda of Toledo; daughter, Leslie of Chicago; brother, Jason (Penny) Bingham of Galena, Ill.; brother, Matt Bingham of Warren, Ill.; nephews, Nathan and Nicholas; and nieces, Stephanie, Katie and Amanda.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Helen Bingham; grandparents, Ralph and Frances Coates and William and Ruth Bingham; and mother-in-law, Margaret Abrams.
A memorial fund is established.
