Shaffer, Verlon Edward
Verlon Edward Shaffer, 61, of Viola, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at his home following an extended illness. Graveside memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, at Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa. Pastor Laurie Riley will officiate at the service.
Surviving are brothers, Lee Shaffer of Glenwood and Dwayne (Carolyn) Shaffer of Greentop, Mo.; a sister, Lynne Shaffer Kepros of Springville; two nephews, Aaron (Brittany) Shaffer of St. Charles, Mo., and Richard Kepros of Springville; three nieces, Shawn (John) Wichmann of Kirksville, Mo., April Miller of Garland, Texas and the Rev. Jamie Kepros of Fort Collins, Colo.; nine great-nieces and a great-nephew; his ex-wife, Carolyn Kaltenbach of Viola; stepchildren, Rhonda (Dan) Koppenhaver of Anamosa, Kim Geltz of Loveland, Colo., Rodney (Angie) Geltz of Anamosa and Dawn (Jerry) Walker of Viola; and seven stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Helen (Shoop) Shaffer of Anamosa and Martelle; and two brothers, Harold and David Shaffer.
Verlon Edward Shaffer was born March 21, 1952, in Anamosa, Iowa. He attended Amber and Anamosa schools, and then graduated from Lincoln of Stanwood in 1970. He starred in high school football and wrestling. He enjoyed working on the farm, his horses, dogs, hunting and fishing.
Verlon married Carolyn Kaltenbach in 1983. He was employed by Penford Products in Cedar Rapids until he became disabled in 1995. He had also worked as a millwright. He was very adept at anything he tried. He resided in Viola, where he enjoyed mowing his lawn, grilling out, his pets, visits and fishing trips with his family.
He will be missed.
