Shaffer, Joanne R.

Joanne R. Shaffer, 76, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at the Hills Atrium Village. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, where visitation will be after 1 p.m. until the services. Private family graveside services will take place at Memory Gardens at a later time.

Joanne Ruth Zwicki was born April 24, 1934, in Iowa City, the daughter of Emil J. and Stella (Jones) Zwicki. She married Dwight H. Shaffer on Aug. 12, 1953. For a number of years she worked as an invoice clerk at Moore Business Forms and for nearly 20 years as a nurse's aide at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Joanne was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. She enjoyed life, camping, traveling, crocheting, gardening, canning, and cooking for her family. In fact, nothing came before her family, especially after her grandson, Nicholas, was born. He was the twinkle in his grandmother's eye!

Her family includes her husband, Dwight; sons and their wives, Kevin and Karen Shaffer, and their son, Nicholas, of Iowa City and Gary and Teresa Shaffer of West Branch; her brother, James Zwicki of Hiawatha; and her sister, Gladys Nugent.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister-in-law, Bessie Zwicki.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Joanne's memory to Iowa City Hospice.
