Shaffer, Delmar G. 'Hap'
A celebration of life for Delmar G. “Hap” Shaffer, 80, of Iowa City, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church in rural Iowa City. Burial with military honors will be held before the service at 9 a.m. at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.
A general memorial fund has been established. Delmar Shaffer died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home following a sudden illness.
Delmar Glenn Shaffer was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Iowa City, the son of Walter and Edith (Roberts) Shaffer. He graduated from Parnell High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On April 2, 1955, he was united in marriage to Sallie Neff in Virginia, Minn. Hap farmed for many years and worked in manufacturing. He was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #17 of Iowa City, the VFW of Iowa City and the Iowa Rabbit Breeder's Association. Hap enjoyed raising dogs, rabbits and horses, cooking, fishing and playing with his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife, Sallie of Iowa City; one son, Doug (Sandy) Shaffer of Iowa City; two daughters, Jeanette Shaffer of Riverside and Karen (Mike) Dinnel of Iowa City; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Alverta Williams of Tiffin; and one brother, Walter (Betty) Shaffer of Iowa City.
Preceding Hap in death were his parents; one sister, Veva Colony; and four brothers, Wayne, Robert, Mervin and Paul.
