Shadden, Marie Elizabeth
Marie Elizabeth Shadden, 96, of Tama, passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Summit Pointe Senior Living Community in Marion under the care of Hospice Compassus. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama, with the Rev. Keith Tomlinson officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in rural Tama. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Marie was born Sept. 18, 1915, in rural Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Burton Alfred and Anna Louise (Schmidt) Depew. She graduated from Tama High School. Marie taught at Columbia No. 8 rural school until she was married in 1941. On Feb. 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Darl Shadden at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Tama. They farmed their entire life south of Tama on the farm where she was raised. Marie lived on the same farm for over 70 years.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama and the ladies circle. She was also a member of Farm Bureau. Marie enjoyed quilting, crocheting and doing puzzles. She collected dolls and lady bugs and liked riding carousels. She enjoyed giving out hugs and Marie always had a smile for everyone.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Darl on Jan. 31, 1998; a son, Roger; two brothers, Glenn and Marvin Depew; one sister, Edna Ferneau; and an aunt and uncle, Alma and Gus Backen, who took her into their home when her mother passed away when she was 4.
Survivors include one son, Lavern (Susan) Shadden of Springville; her daughter-in-law, Evelyn “Mike” Shadden of Toledo; four grandchildren, Tovi (Chris) Armstrong, Chris (Lori) Shadden, Russell (Janet) Shadden and Scott (Tammy) Shadden; great-grandchildren, Zachariah and Cassandra Armstrong, Megan and Colton Shadden, Preston and Ashley Reed, and Lauren and Justin Abel; one sister, Hazel Tomlinson of Gilman; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama.
