Settelmayer, Marion Kanak
Marion Kanak Settelmayer, 100, of Iowa City, died Thursday, May 27, 2010, at Crestview Care Center in West Branch. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 7 tonight.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The First United Methodist Church of Iowa City or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Marion was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie Maresh Kanak. She married John C. Settelmayer on Aug. 12, 1936. He died Aug. 15, 1999. Her only child, Gail Settelmayer Houston, died May 6, 2003. Mrs. Settelmayer was a graduate of the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois. She worked briefly as a librarian. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Phi Mu sorority. She was a gifted seamstress and talented hostess.
She loved flower arranging and was past president of the Atlanta, Ga., Garden Club. She enjoyed crafts, bridge, and traveling. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, attending many spring training games, and of Hawkeye sports, holding season tickets for many years to Iowa Women's basketball.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Scott (Kathy) Houston, Stephen (Shawna) Houston and Stacy (Wesley) Houston Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Madison, Tyler, Alec, Cheyenne, Stephen, Mason and Bailey Houston and Hunter, Andrew and Blake Johnson; her brothers, Bob (Dee) Kanak of Iowa City and Art (Fran) Kanak of St. Charles, Mo.; her sister, Alice Kanak Houston of Leesburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Settelmayer; daughter, Gail Houston; sisters, Gladys Furminger, Evelyn Monk and Lois Masters; and a brother, Joe Kanak.
The family extends their appreciation to the staff at Crestview Care Center for all the tender care they provided to Marion.
