Seng, Elizabeth 'Betty' June (Spratte)
Elizabeth “Betty” June (Spratte) Seng, 84, of Marion, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her son, Joseph Seng (Carol Ellis) of Cedar Rapids, and children, Heather (Jason) Underwood, Amber, Nicole and Nick Seng; son, Jim (Diane) Seng of Woodlands, Texas, and son, Luke (Mary) Seng; son, John Seng of Houston, Texas, and children, Nolan and Catherine Seng; daughter, Mary (Steve) Mysak of Guttenberg, and children, John (Jackie) Mysak and Michele (Mark) Bettenga; daughter, Carol (Dick) Groth of Marion, and children, Scott (Angela) Groth, and Lisa (Curt) Switzer; and daughter, Ginny (Dave) Maier of Alburnett, and children, Christie (Brent) VanWey, Amy (Shawn) Serfoss, and Sandy (Ross) Naughton; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard, who died Nov. 6, 1999; her sister, Caroline Zenisek; and her infant sister, Anna Spratte.
Betty was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Van Horne, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Lydia (Tillie) Spratte. She attended Mount Mercy College and taught school before her marriage. Betty married Leonard Seng on June 1, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, and spent much of her early married life helping to raise their children. Betty also worked as a clerk at Younkers, a seamstress for Armstrong's, volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids for many years, and enjoyed working in her flower garden.
