Seery, Rosetta Sylvia Cerny
Rosetta Sylvia Cerny Seery, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died at her home of cancer on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner, with military services by the American Legion Post 727. Burial: 1 p.m., St. Mary's Cemetery, Solon. A vigil will be held 5 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may call on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m., and Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Rosetta is survived by her daughter, Kay and Forrest (Chip) Moyer of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jessica, Abby and Jake Osborne, and Zach and Mikayla Moyer; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Marcus Osborne; a sister-in-law, Lois Seery of Galesburg, Ill.; nieces, Eileen Rogers and Mary Louise Jenson; nephews, William (BJ) Leonard and John Morris; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband, Waldo in 1986; and two sisters, Mary Morris and Lavona Leonard.
Rosetta was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Cedar County, the daughter of Joseph and Matilda (Miller) Cerny. Following her graduation from high school in 1938, she attended University of Northern Iowa. She served in the Navy during World War II as a Specialist G and was an instructor at the naval station in Memphis, Tenn. After her naval service she graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Master of Science degree in nutrition. She taught in schools in Cedar, Linn and Johnson counties. Rosetta was the head dietitian at St. Luke's Hospital for seven years before her employment at Mercy Medical Center where she worked for one year. She married Waldo Seery on Nov. 25, 1961, in Cedar Rapids. She had made her home in Solon before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1950.
Rosetta was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, CRST Association for substitute teachers, St. Martha Circle, St. Mark Church and Witwer Senior Center.
Rosetta enjoyed trivia, conquering puzzles, and all sports, especially the Hawkeyes. She was a huge Cubs fan.
