Wilmer V. "Wimpy" Sedlacek
Wilmer V. “Wimpy” Sedlacek, 82, of Fairfax, died Friday, June 14, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfax, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. A visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, Cedar Rapids. Burial: St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites.
Survivors include his loving wife, Rose, with whom he spent 62+ loving years; and his five children, Kathy, Judy (Bill) Folkers Jr., Steve (Karen) Sedlacek, Nancy (Merl) Trimpe and Diane Ford. He has 12 grandchildren; 20+ great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy (Jerry) Chalupnik.
Wimpy was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Wimpy was born Jan. 26, 1931, in rural Fairfax. He joined the National Guard in 1947 and worked in the motor pool. He owned and operated a custom corn sheller and baler for many years. He worked at Wilson and Co. and Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids for 28 years. Wimpy was a steward in three departments from 1968 through 1989.
He loved playing baseball and with his music he loved playing his trumpet.
He was a Farm Progress worker in Amana, operating the unloading dock for many years and a ring man at area auctions also for many years. He participated in many parades driving his fire truck and flat bed.
Wimpy was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Walford and St. Patrick's Parish in Fairfax, where he was an usher for many years.
He was a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club and held office as vice president. Wimpy was a Moose Lodge 304 past governor and Fairfax Legion Post 572 trustee. He loved his old tractors, cars and steam engines. You could always see him at Ushers Ferry or the Old Threshers Reunion and won Tractor of the Year for 2004.
Wimpy's family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their kind care and are grateful to the oncology staff for their professionalism.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the family of Wimpy Sedlacek.
