Seda, Charles
Charles Seda, 98, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church, by the Rev. David O'Connor, with military rites by the American Legion. Interment: St. John Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today and 9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday.
Charles is survived by children, Darla (Ron) Glynn of Norco, Calif., and Mary Kay Frary of Cedar Rapids; sister, Helen Popek of Cedar Rapids; brother, Joseph (Sharon) Seda of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Pat Bousek and Alice Seda.
Charles was born Jan. 29, 1912, in Cedar Rapids, to Charles Sr. and Katherine (Sebetka) Seda. Charles served in the Army during World War II for 3 1/2, stationed in England. He married Irma Mootz Herrig on Sept. 30, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. Irma died in 2002. He graduated from Loras College in 1934. Following graduation, Charles taught math, science, and Latin for three years from 1934 to 1937 at Immaculate Conception High School. He was employed for 42 years by the United States Postal Service as clerk, auditor, and as superintendent for 17 years, and Postmaster/Sectional Center manager for 12 years.
His professional acknowledgments include Iowa Postmaster of the Year, Outstanding Sectional Manager. Charlie always hastened to add ”thanks to an outstanding staff and employees.” He was a past member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, National Association of Postmasters, and the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the National Association of Federal Employees. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he directed the Men's Choir from 1949 to 1973, and a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
Charles will be remembered as a “people person” and always had a smile and greeting for everyone he met and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
