SCOTT DOUGLAS WILCOX
Iowa City
Scott Douglas Wilcox, an exemplary son, brother, uncle and friend died at his home on March 6, 2021. Scott was born Sept. 17, 1951, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Robert and Janet Wilcox. He graduated from West High School in 1969 and served in the U.S. Navy as an operating room technician. He returned to Iowa City and became a self-taught stained glass artist and stone mason, an excellent carpenter and builder. These talents culminated in a masterpiece: his home on Windwood Road near Hills. The bonfires, fire logs and potlucks were unforgettable. Guitar, bird watching and road trips were among his many other interests.
Over the decades, he cultivated a diverse group of friends from many walks of life. He liked to say he took early retirement every day at 2 p.m. to make time for them. With his sisters and brother, he had regular sib suppers, to the delight of their mother.
He is survived by his sisters, Lisa (Bill) Case, Karen Wilcox, Amy Wilcox and Nina (Jim) Petran; his brother, Kirk (Denise) Wilcox; 10 nieces and nephews; and his Dachshund, Tula.
Scott left the world a better place and the heartbreak is shared by so many others in his community. He was a model of compassion, perseverance, strength and goodness. A gathering for the many friends and family members will be planned in the fall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to The Shelter House, P.O. Box 3146, Iowa City, IA 52244, (https://shelterhouseiowa.org/donate/) Online condolences and memories of Scott may be shared with the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
