Schulte, Vernon 'Ben' F.
Vernon “Ben” F. Schulte, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, by Father Tom McDermott. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Vernon is survived by his son, Steven C. and wife Karen; grandson, Nathanael; sisters and brother, Evelyn Barta, Marie Hannen, Marion (Merlin) Kurt, Rita (William) Hunter and Denis (Kitty) Schulte; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Teresa; parents; a brother, Lloyd; sister, Margaret Schulte; an infant brother, Edwin; brothers-in-law, Don Barta and Warren Hannen; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Schulte.
Vernon was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Norway, the son of Charles A. and Gertrude M. Boddicker Schulte. He graduated from St. Michael's Grade School in Norway and Norway High School in 1942. He married Teresa Viktor on Nov. 27, 1950, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Vernon served in the Army during World War II. Returning home he began working for Iowa Manufacturing for 42 years until his retirement on March 27, 1987. He was a member of St. Ludmila Parish, where he had volunteered his time at Bingo with his son. Vernon enjoyed a good game of cards and the friends he made on his weekly bus trips to various casinos.
The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Lisa Ercolini Bhatia, Dr. Todd Langager, Dr. Mark Goedken, Mercy Medical Center and Hospice of Mercy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Ludmila Catholic Church or The Xavier Foundation.
