Schraad, August J. 'JR'
August J. “JR” Schraad, 70, of 529 Country Club Ct., Dyersville, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at 7:55 p.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Friends and relatives may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a wake service will be held at 4 p.m. and a Legion service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, with the Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville, with full military honors afforded by the Dyersville American Legion Post 137 and the New Vienna VFW Post 7736.
August was born May 16, 1939, in Dyersville, Iowa, son of August C. and Amanda (Roling) Schraad Sr. He received his education in the Dyersville area country schools. On May 22, 1982, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Trenkamp at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier JR farmed in the Dyersville area. He was an Army veteran, having served from 1962-1964. He was a member of the Dyersville American Legion Post 137 and New Vienna VFW Post 7736. He was also a member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish, Dyersville, and the Dubuque County Farm Bureau.
JR loved to buy and restore two cylinder tractors. He was an excellent cook, loved a good game of cards, visiting with family and friends, and sharing a good story. He had a great love for farming, and often enjoyed riding around the countryside in his truck.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Schraad of Dyersville; one brother, David Schraad Sr. of Dyersville; one sister, Bette (David) Beckius of East Dubuque, Ill.; one brother-in-law, Joe (Jean) Rubner of Dyersville; his godchild, Kevin (Denise) Rubner of Manchester; several nieces and nephews; all his cousins in Germany; his mother-in-law, Rosella “Sally” Trenkamp of Dyersville; and five brothers- and sisters-in-law, Steve (Ann) Trenkamp, Allan Trenkamp, Mike Trenkamp, Donnie (Karla) Trenkamp, all of Dyersville, and Tom (Lori) Trenkamp of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Jim Schraad; two sisters, Anna Jean Schraad and Kay Rubner; and his father-in-law, Ralph Trenkamp on July 9, 2008.
