Schott, Howard

Howard Schott, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, with military honors. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Inurnment: Lisbon Cemetery, at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Maxine; two sons, Dennis (Jill) of Garner and Don (Donna) of Cedar Rapids; son-in-law, John Dohlen of Kent, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Herbert of Cedar Rapids; brother, Bob of Marathon, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry, Art and Frank; and his daughter, Dianne Dohlen.

Howard was born Feb. 19, 1921, the son of Arthur and Rena (Carpenter) Schott, in Thorp, Wis. In 1934, his family moved to Iowa and he graduated from Lisbon High School in 1938. Howard joined the United States Army in 1942; he served his country in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Howard was discharged in 1945 and began to work for Iowa Electric, where he retired in 1984 after 38 ½ years of service.

On Oct. 4, 1946, he was united in marriage to Maxine Leigh and they settled in Lisbon until 1951 when they moved to Cedar Rapids. Howard and Maxine enjoyed spending their winters in Florida in their Winnebago. He was a member of the Iowa Electric softball and bowling teams, VFW and American Legion in Lisbon, Winnebago International Travelers and served 18 years on the Light Company Employees Credit Union board of directors. Howard loved fishing, traveling, camping, boating and watching sports.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Howard.
