Schorg, George F.
George F. Schorg, 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 unexpectedly while vacationing in Florida. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home where friends and family may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friends and family may also visit after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church until the time of service.
George is survived by his wife, Donna; sons, Dan (Marsha) of Blairstown, and Mike of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Janette of Central City and Christine (Doug) Mesch of Central City; grandchildren, Christopher (Vanessa), Jennelle (Jon), Nicholle, Jessica and Miguel Vega, Melissa (Daniel) and George (Jaci) Schorg, Dakota and Montana Schorg, and Hunter and Marina Mesch; great-grandson, Logan Vega; brother, Robert (Wanda) Schorg; sister. Rita Banke of Cedar Rapids; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tomas Vega; sisters, Rae Jean Erenberger and Clara Jones; nephew, Thomas McClain; in-laws, Henry and Mary McDermott; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fischer.
George Franklin Schorg was born June 6, 1942, in North Buena Vista, the son of Delbert and Minnie Wick Schorg. He graduated from Jefferson High School and then from Drafting School at Hawkeye College. He married Donna Marie McDermott on Sept. 14, 1963, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. George worked as an architectural draftsman for LeFebure and as a machine operator at Hawkeye Rubber and Centro Inc., retiring in 2007.
George was a great artist and had a knack for hand painting ceramics. He enjoyed gas powered RC cars and airplanes, computer games and watching the History Channel and Sci-Fi. Reba McEntire and John Wayne were his favorites. An avid outdoorsman, George spent time camping, hunting, fishing and traveling. He liked his Dodge truck, NASCAR races and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.
