Schoon, LaVern
LaVern Schoon, 84, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning, Aug. 21, 2013. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello. The Rev. James Adix will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

LaVern married Vera Fay Null on June 10, 1948. They were blessed with four sons, David (Penny) Schoon and Dan (Deb) Schoon, both of Monticello, Doug (Sarah) Schoon, Coralville, and Dana (Lisa) Schoon, Monticello. He is survived by all of them, as well as seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Susan (Curt) Paulsen, Scotch Grove; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Parrot and Betty Lou McVay.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elnora and husband Herb Husman; his mother- and father-in-law, E.B. and Gusty Null; and two brothers-in-laws Bob Parrot and Luverne McVay.
LaVern Leroy Schoon was born July 11, 1929, the son of George C. and Matilda Kray Schoon. At 16 years of age he helped his father at the family-owned Sinclair Station. Upon graduating from the Monticello Community Schools in 1946, he joined his father, George C., and grandfather, William G., at Schoon Implement in Monticello. In 1965 he bought the business from his father and added the Dodge line of cars and trucks. They were one of the oldest Allis-Chalmers dealers in Iowa. They also sold New Idea, Arts Way and Owatonna equipment. LaVern was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was also an accomplished musician and played his accordion in area bands, including the Dick Ketelsen Band, Tom Owens Cowboys and Ray Aldo Orchestra.
LaVern was a member of the Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce and Monticello Lions Club. He earned many awards during his career selling farm equipment and automobiles. LaVern and Vera loved to travel and camp with friends.
