Schnoes, James H.
James H. Schnoes, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Countryview Care Center in North Liberty surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill, Coralville, where a vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Graveside services, with military honors, will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Adel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the James Schnoes Memorial Fund.
Jim was born April 23, 1930, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Edward Adam and Katherine Schlitche Schnoes. He graduated from Holy Name High School in Marcus, where he farmed with his family. Jim was proud to serve in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 in Korea, Japan and Hawaii. On Aug. 2, 1958, Jim married Mary Oswald in Marcus. They moved to Iowa City, where Jim was a well respected auto body repairman and mechanic. He was employed at McGurk-Meyers for over 30 years.
Jim and Mary have been members for 51 years of St. Mary's Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Jim was 51-year member of American Legion Post 721. Jim and Mary had been involved with Boy Scouts. Jim loved to bowl, fish, trap shoot, garden and landscape their home which they built in 1963. They loved to travel, especially trips to Europe and when they drove to Alaska.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary; their three children, Steve (Tonya) of Woodland Park, Colo., Mark (Diane) of Coralville and Susan (Kent) Christensen of West Des Moines; and six grandchildren, Paul, Stephanie, AJ, Claire, Ashley and Matthew.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.
