Schneider, John 'Jack'
John “Jack” A. Schneider, 80, of Iowa City, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., where a vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, St. Mary's Catholic Church or to Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center.
John was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Garner, the son of George and Maude Ayers Schneider. He was raised in Garner and graduated from Garner High School. Shortly following high school, John moved to Iowa City where he met Nancy Daniels. The couple were later married at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Feb. 2, 1951.
For over 26 years, John worked as a service technician for Sears, retiring in 1993. During that time, John repaired appliances for countless customers and friends. Even following his retirement, John continued to repair appliances from his home until his health no longer allowed him to do so.
In his free time, John enjoyed camping, hunting, bowling and playing cards (especially Euchre). He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and a longtime member of the Coachman Club, R.S.E. S. and Kiwanis.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Iowa City; two daughters, Mary (Jerry) Sasina and Cindy Cox, both of Iowa City; three sisters, Genevieve Schneider-Constantino of Sacramento, Calif., Pat (Bud) Portwood of Harlan, and Theo Schneider-Dodd of Clear Lake, Calidf.; one brother, Elrede (Velma) Schneider of Marshalltown; and three grandchildren, Jason (Christi) Sasina and their son, Jared all of Hills, Jamie (Josh) Hanson and their children, Dillon and Kaylee, all of Lone Tree, and Jennifer Cox and her daughter, Victoria Threlkeld. both of Iowa City.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy; three sisters, Millie, Anna Marie and Elexine; and a brother, Armond.
John was truly a loving man who always tried to do whatever possible to make his family's life better. He cherished his time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be missed by his entire family and his longtime pet companion, Rags.
